Riverdale is a stunningly well-produced adaptation of the Archie comic book series. It draws from the modern world and has traded battle of the bands concerts in 1942 for a small town horror story full of secrets and dark themes. Within the first 30 seconds of the introductory episode, we’ve been introduced to the small town of Riverdale. The writers were sure to allude to the dark themes right from the start. This is shown in this quote from our narrator, Jughead Jones played by actor and co-writer Cole Sprouse. “From a distance it presents itself like so many other small towns all over the world, safe, decent, innocent. Get closer though, and you start seeing the shadows underneath.” All 7 of the primary characters in Riverdale are introduced within the first 5 minutes and given a mild backstory which is extrapolated throughout the rest of the series, scene by scene. The writers did well to show many different facets of our heroes and villains, depicting everything from their romance...

During the course of my Fall 2017 semester at Middlesex Community College, I have grown to understand just a bit more of what I want in life and in work as well as how I will get there. This is all thanks to a course called Careers In Media taught by Professor Rich Lenoce and the guest speakers he booked. We had the opportunity to hear their takes on different veins of the media industries, everything from Television, YouTube, and Film Making to Web Design, Music Production, and News. Going into this semester, I was fairly certain I wanted to work in Television to bring in income and work on films as a hobby. This course showed me that there are many different avenues in media that could bring me just as much income and perhaps more or equal happiness. In many ways, it made my vision for a career more real than at any point I can recall. In the coming years I’m sure what I’ve learned here will be of use in whatever path I choose to travel. In the coming years I’ll have many more produc...

In July of 2013, Adobe made major changes to their business model. The switch from Adobe Creative Suite releases which carried a hefty price tag to the Adobe Creative Cloud subscription service made it more affordable for artists to get their hands on powerful professional grade software. Another change that has meant great things for the digital media industry is the streamlined updates with the Creative Cloud. Whenever Adobe pushes bugfixes to the software, adds new features, or corrects old ones, subscribers get the update immediately. This was and continues to be a huge step for the TV & Film industry, because in an ever more advanced technological society we are seeing more ways to create content that stray from the norms.

With these new possibilities comes the necessity for new features, a fantastic example of this is Virtual Reality. As a student worker at Middlesex Community College, I had a chance to see first hand how Adobe Premiere Pro has progressed to include an entire VR e...

Recently I watched the much anticipated science fiction film “Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets.” Crowds awaited this film with eager eyes because of the sheer scale of the world building the film attempts to accomplish. Like any other movie goer I walked into this experience expecting to be wowed, and wowed I was, but here’s what the movie got wrong.

When making a major motion picture, it’s common to use big name actors to further advertise the final product because they have brand recognition among audiences. Valerian blotched this by hiring a pop culture star who is not an actor and giving them a minor role in the film that felt haphazardly put together. Beyonce may be a powerhouse but truthfully she did not add much to this project, her voice & her character’s presence seemed out of place. The character works well as a plot device yet it consistently reminded me that I am watching a film.

One might also say that this film was lacking in quality voice overs, especially towar...

For over a decade YouTube has reigned supreme as the internet’s go-to platform for sharing and enjoying video content. Short form media created not by a Hollywood studio, but by amateurs, artists who are just getting into videography as a hobby. In time, the more successful of these artists have grown their audience into the tens and even hundreds of thousands. Around the beginning of the 2010’s, YouTube began partnering up with corporations and companies both big and small. These businesses would offer a small per-view payout in exchange for running a 15-30 second ad at the start of the YouTuber’s videos. Over the past 5 years, the YouTube platform has grown exponentially both in terms of the size of the community and a number of creators making profits. Many such creators have been able to make a comfortable living off of their profession on the site. It is relatively commonplace to see YouTubers with subscriber counts in the millions and videos with views over 300,000. This is...
